A Symbol for Ascension Lutheran Church
This symbol of the Ascension is an original design by Katherine Buck for use by Ascension Evangelical Lutheran Church. The chariot is an ancient symbol of the Ascension. Its symbolism is taken from the reference in II Kings 2:11, "... behold, a chariot of fire and horses of fire ... and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven." This symbolism of the chariot has also been applied to the Ascension of Christ, for which our church is named. The XP figure is the most wide spread and best known monogram of Christ. It is made up of the first two letters of Christ's name when written in Greek -- XPICTOC -- and is also called Signum Dei. It is a Christian symbol possibly older than the cross itself. The XP symbolizes Christ, and the chariot, and the Ascension.
